Promoting a Community of Public Service

About the Instructor
Joseph Savage, Division Chief (Retired, El Paso Fire Department)
I believe that we are happiest in life when we are in service to others. As a public servant, I had the privilege of serving the El Paso community as a firefighter for twenty seven years and am now enjoying serving the public as an instructor at the Center for Career and Technology Education (CCTE). I believe the opportunities the fire service presents to those who successfully pursue it are as rewarding as any profession can have. Service to others
is stressed in all the classes I teach, not just for a grade, but because it is what firefighters are called to do.
I believe that there is dignity in all work. I stress respect, reverence and responsibility to others as a participant in the fire tech program. I also believe that we have all been given at least one gift, and that we
are obligated to share our gifts with others. Teaching my students about the fire service through lecture, practical exercise and by sharing my experience in the fire service is my attempt at sharing all the gifts I have been given.
Dream. Challenge. Succeed.

About the Program
Making a Difference
The Fire Technology Program helps prepare students for fire service careers through hands-on skill instruction and practice as well as through written and oral presentations. Areas covered include: firefighter safety; breathing apparatus; fire streams; ladders, ropes, knots and hoses; fire control; ventilation; emergency medical care (First Aid/CPR) rescue; and protecting fire cause evidence. Student skills are evaluated using standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
This program gives students supervised, real world, practical applications of learned knowledge and skills subject matter related to careers in the fire service. Course experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience.
